Brotherly Love - "Cans for Caleb"

Caleb Guin and his family, brother, Jordan and mom, Cindy, are members of our church and need our help. Caleb is 11 years old and has Muscular Dystrophy. He is confined to a wheelchair and is now having trouble getting in/out of bed, in/out of the pool (for therapy) etc.

In the past few years, his brother, Jordan has been collecting aluminum cans while he is out for walks, play, etc. and earned about $1,500. His mom put it in the bank for him and he told her that when it was time that Caleb needed the money for something, he would gladly give him the money he had earned. Well, the time has come. The family needs a lift system to help Caleb and the cost is $7,500.

They would like to continue collecting the cans, but need our help. So, we are asking for everyone to save their aluminum ‘Cans for Caleb’. You can bring your cans (in a large plastic bag) to the church, to the Guin’s home, or call them and they will come and pick them up. We will also have several large trash cans around the church to collect the cans that you discard while here at the church.

Caleb will also be having surgery soon on both of his Achilles tendons and will be in casts for about 6 weeks. If you have any questions or would like to call Cindy, she can be reached at 972-202-1876. On behalf of the Guin’s, thank you for your help and prayers.

Update - Brotherly Love Extends Into Community Caring!

Church members starting saving aluminum cans for Caleb and the story spread into the community. People from as far as Plano have come to drop off “Cans for Caleb” and the money has continued to grow, just slowly.

Vernon Schrade, who is also a member of First United Methodist Church, took Caleb’s story to the Rowlett Lion’s Club, hoping that they might be able to help. After hearing Caleb’s story, they agreed to purchase the Hoyer Lift for him that will allow his mother to get him in/out of the pool for physical therapy. Now he will be able to exercise his leg muscles and strengthen his upper body.

We will continue to collect aluminum cans for Caleb, as expenses will continue to incur. Caleb has also agreed to help another family in the community that has 2 older children with the same situation as his, purchase a lift for their pool.

The Guin’s would like to express their deepest thanks and gratitude to the Rowlett Lion’s Club, First United Methodist Church, Rowlett and the community. Please continue to help with their ministry by saving your aluminum cans and bring them to the church!
